History of Dharamshala
It was 1846 when the beautiful land of Dharamshala was discovered after occupying the Kangra Fort. The British in order to escape from the unbearable heat of summers took shelter in the serene place.
The British invasion led to constant flow of several missionaries, wives of officers and people from different section of society who came to this place to take rest. When Tibet was annexed in the year 1959, the 14th Dalai Lama and his government were driven away. It was then India came to their rescue and provided them shelter at the risk of inviting the wrath of then Republic of China.
From 1960 onwards, they permanent residents of holy town. It was Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of independent India, who handed over the upper Dharamshala to the Tibetan refugees in 1960. Today the holy town is flooded with a large number of Tibetan refuges resulting in making the holy town the 'Little Tibet' of India.
